Part 2: The Grammar of Signs
A Long before written language existed, people created symbols to represent ideas: a circle to mean "safe", an arrow to show direction, a colour to signal danger. Good symbol design still aims for the same goal today — communicating an idea instantly, without a single word of explanation.
B Every well-designed sign depends on a handful of key elements: its shape, its colour, and its proportion relative to the surrounding space. A sign that is too small in proportion to a busy corridor will be missed entirely, however appealing its design. Designers must also decide how explicit a symbol needs to be — an overly abstract icon may look elegant, but a traveller searching for an exit under stress does not have time to interpret ambiguity.
C Retailers face a related challenge: which symbol will encourage a shopper to purchase one product over another? A supermarket that wants to promote a wide range of eco-friendly goods, for example, often uses a single green leaf symbol across hundreds of products, letting a shopper opt for them at a glance. Some brands overcome the limits of one symbol by combining it with colour coding; others accept that no single icon can be worthwhile across every product line, since an unsuitable symbol used too broadly can confuse shoppers rather than guide them.
D Not every symbol succeeds on its first attempt. One well-known design for a recycling scheme went through several rounds of testing before its final version was approved, and each cycle of feedback removed a small element of ambiguity from the icon. Early drafts were criticised for being amusing rather than serious — testers said one version looked more like a spinning toy than a serious environmental symbol.
E Cultural context can also shape whether a symbol works. A gesture, colour or figure that carries one meaning in one country can carry an entirely different, sometimes unsuitable, meaning elsewhere. Should a machine be trusted to read the signs that humans design for one another? Engineers now train cameras and sensors to recognise the same symbols a person would use, so that a delivery robot can read a "no entry" sign on a warehouse floor, or a self-driving car can distinguish a stop sign from a sticker placed nearby as a prank. The technology is no longer a distant prospect; it is already part of ordinary transport and logistics.
Early results were more complex than expected. One well-known study showed that a handful of small stickers, arranged in a particular pattern, could fool an artificial vision system into misreading a stop sign as a speed-limit sign. The consequence of this finding was a wave of caution among engineers, who now warn that a system capable of recognising a symbol correctly in a laboratory is not automatically capable of doing the same on a rain-soaked road at night.
Even so, most engineers consider it inevitable that machines reading physical symbols will become a common resource in transport, logistics and public safety. The direct benefits are hard to ignore: a distribution centre that once relied entirely on human attention can now share that responsibility with a system that never becomes tired, distracted or careless. A machine that can resemble a careful human reader in ordinary conditions is a genuinely useful resource, and it would be short-sighted to reject the technology simply because it lacks perfect judgement. But it would be equally short-sighted to treat any single successful test as final proof, when the real test — a busy street, at night, in the rain — has not yet been passed with full confidence.
